Bug #1031
Shootable triggers and freelook
0%
Description
Attached is a test wad featuring a shootable switch.
Look at the switch, then aim at the floor or ceiling and fire a shot; the shootable switch is still activated inspire of your shots not hitting the switch at all and instead hitting the floor ceiling below/above you.
This bug goes back to 1.8.6 at least.

Tested in both Doom and Heretic and this issue occurs with ranged hitscan attacks in both games.
HeXen has no ranged hitscan weapons to test with and melee hitscan weapons aren't affected by freelook: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=3519060&group_id=74815&atid=542099

This may occur in Vanilla Heretic due to a remnant of the original hitscan code;
In the original Heretic, hitscan attacks did not impact against the floor/ceiling and instead travelled along the floor/ceiling impacting against the top/bottom of the nearest wall.
I guess this confirms that Vanilla Doom had the same limit but it never occurred because no hitscan attack in Doom can ever hit the floor due to lack of look up/down (even the DB shotgun with vertical spread; indeed that the DB shotgun's hitscans can hit the floor in Dday is technically a change in the weapons behaviour).

"This may occur in Dday due to a remnant of the original hitscan
code;"
Correcting an important typo.

Ok, let's try to reword the below to be clearer:
This may occur in Dday due to a remnant of the original hitscan code;
In the original Doom and Heretic, hitscan attacks did not impact against the
floor/ceiling and instead travelled along the floor/ceiling impacting
against the top/bottom of the nearest wall.
Even Doom 2's DB shotgun with its vertical spread had this behaviour.
Indeed that the DB shotgun's hitscans can hit the floor in Dday is technically a change in the weapons behaviour.
