fog won't work

Description
Typing "fog on" in the console makes the fog blink and
go off. It doesn't appear in Hexen level Darkmere
either (not sure if it's supposed to in Doomsday).
This is on ubuntu dapper with nvidia 1.0.8762 drivers.
